Are Video Games Art?
Super Mario by Nintendo 2011
Super Mario Bros. by Nintendo 1985
A question that has been asked for generations are video games art? I would agree that video games are art. The time and dedication that happens to make one scene come to life. Video game creator should be considering artist they just choose to use technology as their media instead of the more traditional ways that is more mainstreamed as art. Nintendo is a big name in the video gaming world. I would not consider myself a gamer but of the few games I have tried the Mario franchise has been one. Nintendo is a Japanese multinational video game company headquarter in Kyoto. Nintendo was founded in 1889. The creator for Mario is Shigeru Miyamoto.
I'm choosing to focus on postmodern 1980-present time. Mario has multiple different looks throughout his time of being in the video game world. In each game you can see a different style is taken to make Mario interesting to fans. I love in the 1985 the color choices to make the video game pop with color. Looking at it feels me with nostalgic vibes.
Minecraft by Mojang studios 2011
Minecraft is a video game that is very familiar to most of us. It was developed by Mojang Studios a Swedish game company. Markus Persson was the creator of Minecraft. Minecraft is known for its blocks and pixel-like design. The color choices I feel like are kind of muted, so it gives a calming sense to the viewer. I would compare it to an abstract art style.
Cats and soup by Hidea 2021
Cats and soup is a mobile game that I play that you collect cats that make different kinds of foods mainly soup related. The artwork is probably one of my favorites out of the three gaming companies that I have shared with you. There are no sharp edges to this game in the content or the graphic design. I know I keep saying this but again the color choices by the creator are more on the bright pastel side in fluffy town but more muted natural tone colors of cats and soup. I hope if before reading this you didn't think videogames were art but now after reading it you do.

I really appreciate the personal touch in your blog post, especially how you reflect on your own experiences with video games, even though you don’t consider yourself a "gamer." I completely agree with your sentiment that video game creators are artists, using technology as their medium to bring immersive worlds to life. Your discussion of Nintendo’s impact, especially with Mario, really resonates with me. I grew up playing various Mario games, and I’ve always been struck by how each iteration of Mario has its own unique art style, from the classic 1985 version with vibrant colors to the more recent ones that have experimented with 3D and intricate environments. I also love how you touch on Minecraft, a game that, with its simple blocky design, still manages to evoke a sense of creativity and wonder. The comparison to abstract art is spot on, as the muted color palette of Minecraft creates a calming, almost meditative atmosphere. Lastly, your mention of Cats and Soup really caught my attention; it’s refreshing to see a game praised for its soft, pastel design and gentle aesthetic, showing that art in video games isn’t always about sharp, detailed graphics but can also be about creating a soothing and playful experience.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post, I like how you added your personal experience and your own touch to your blog. I also liked the games you chose to enhance your point of view in this blog. I have to say, personally I do believe video games are art. Each game you presented has its own sense of nostalgia. Such as Mario and Minecraft, both are nostalgic and universally recognizable. I personally have not heard of Cats and Soup fluffy town, because of your blog post I am going to check it out. Your description of the game has peaked my interest in the game. Thank you for that
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your thought. I view all media as art, especially some of the hand drawn video games that you highlighted within your blog. Even something simple like mario has been put together with a unique style and storytelling element and I think that's all it really takes to become art. Some of my favorites include newer titles like The Last of Us because of they're almost photorealistic graphics but the games you highlighted are just as much art even with their more simplistic style.
